I gave up daywork in 1976 as assistant to the accountant at an engineering company because it restricted access to the thing I loved most, which is nature photography. Ten years later I was working as a specialist camera operator for Science Pictures and as a tutor in the RCA Film School. Nature demands more of a committment than any nine to five job, and thankfully, now that is a reality, with university courses in all aspects of managing and conserving the natural world, we can look to solving many of the ills created by a consumer world, nevertheless, the amateur naturalist, in the tradition of Gilbert White, etc., is needed more than ever.
